Cricket West Indies announced a busy summer schedule of cricket at home in several islands, including Grenada! Given that the first series against the South Africans will be played from June 10 – July 3, you know that it was indeed short notice. The press release noted the gratitude of the South Africans.
The West Indian Cricketers will forever be known as the first team to agree to an international tour after the Corona-virus pandemic halted the cricket schedule. Will Cricket West Indies be the first governing body to allow spectators in the ground? Some would argue that with dwindling crowds in the last decade or so, social/physical distancing will not be an issue.
Grenada started its vaccination programme and unlike some Caribbean countries, the Ministry of Health opened it up to anyone who wanted it, free of cost. While broadcast organizers have managed to make the cricket grounds during the Indian Premier League come alive with manufactured crowd noises, it is still not the same as having real humans to create an atmosphere. How am I going to write about what food is available at the ground if I have to watch from home?
Let’s see what the Grenada government and Cricket West Indies decide. In the meantime, I’ll be looking at my work schedule to see when to ask for time off, feeling fortunate that my real job is a short hop to the Grenada National Cricket Stadium.
